Autobiography

I am a Researcher at the Institute of Marine Sciences - Okeanos of the University of the Azores. I completed a PhD degree in Marine Sciences at the University of Barcelona (Spain), where I studied the ecology of marine benthic communities of Mediterranean shelf and canyon habitats using underwater imaging technology, as well as how they are impacted by human activities. After my PhD, I moved to Faial to join the Azores Deep-sea Ecology Research group, where I have continued working on better understanding the diversity and distribution of deep-sea benthic species and communities, and also in the development of low-cost imaging devices for the exploration of deep-sea habitats.

Research interest

My research aims to better understand the ecology of deep-sea benthic species and communities in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean using underwater imaging technology as the main sampling device. More specifically, I focus on deciphering the ecological processes that shape the diversity and spatial distribution of deep-sea benthic fauna at different spatial scales, from small patches to larger geomorphological units, such as submarine canyons and seamounts. The knowledge gathered in these studies is of key relevance for the development of sound conservation strategies to protect deep-sea ecosystems at regional and national levels. In the past years, I have also co-led the development of affordable camera systems for the exploration of deep-sea habitats, such as the Azor drift-cam and stereo-BRUVs.
