Emily Corrigan
Research Assistant
Emily is currently working with us with the position of Research Assistant in the team.
Autobiography
I am a Research Assistant in the Coral Ecophysiology Lab at IMAR, contributing to the Horizon Europe projects REDRESS and BioProtect, which focus on the restoration of deep-sea habitats. I hold a BSc from the University of Guelph (Canada) and an MSc from the National Taiwan Ocean University, where my thesis focused on the reproductive plasticity of a scleractinian coral inhabiting an acidified hydrothermal vent field. My academic background combines coral physiology, molecular biology, and biotechnology, and is complemented by extensive field experience leading scientific dives. Prior to joining IMAR, I worked as a coral research technician at the Cape Eleuthera Institute (The Bahamas) and as a molecular ecotoxicology technician at Wilfrid Laurier University, gaining experience in both tropical and temperate research systems. I also lead the Skills and Professional Development team for the International Coral Reef Society’s Student and Early Career Researcher Chapter.
Research interest
My research focuses on understanding the physiological and molecular mechanisms that underpin coral resilience to environmental stress. I am particularly interested in the development of diagnostic biomarkers and molecular tools to monitor the health, stress, and reproductive status of cold-water corals. By integrating histological, transcriptomic, and exometabolomic approaches, I aim to advance cost-effective and scalable methods for the monitoring and restoration of vulnerable marine ecosystems.
